Why anyone buys one
Four cases where the free certificate is the wrong tool.
These are the situations we actually get asked about. All four are planned rather than available, and each of them is a reason grounded in something outside your website.
A reviewer wants to see a company name
An organisation-validated certificate carries your legal entity inside it, checked before issue. When a procurement or security review asks who stands behind the site, a domain-control certificate has nothing to show them.
A policy names extended validation
The deepest vetting available, carried out against a published procedure. It is almost always bought because a contract or an internal policy names it by name, rather than because of anything a visitor will notice.
It has to go on something we do not host
An appliance, a load balancer, a mail gateway, a machine in your own rack. Our free certificates follow the sites on our platform. A purchased certificate is a file you can install anywhere.
Automation cannot reach your DNS
Free wildcard certificates exist, but they are issued by proving control of your DNS automatically. Where the DNS lives somewhere we cannot reach, buying the wildcard or multi-domain certificate is the straightforward way out.
We are not going to tell you that the free certificate is inferior, because it is not. If none of the four above describes you, keep what you have.
How buying one will work
The hostnames it must cover, where it will be installed, and what is driving the requirement — a review, a contract, an auditor, or a system we do not host.
Often the answer is no, and the certificate you already have does the job. We would rather say so than sell you a file you did not need.
For organisation-validated and extended-validation certificates this is a real check of a real company, and it takes days rather than minutes. We tell you what will be asked for before you commit to anything.

Validation has to be redone periodically, and a paid certificate cannot silently renew itself the way the free one does. The reminder is ours to raise, not yours to remember.

The exact hostnames
Every name it has to cover, spelled out. A certificate that is missing one is a certificate that fails in a browser.
Where it will live
A site we host, or a server, appliance or gateway somewhere else. This decides whether we install it or hand it to you.
What is asking for it
A named policy, a contract clause, a security questionnaire or an auditor. Quote the wording if you have it — it usually tells us exactly which type is required.
The legal entity
For anything above domain control, the registered company name and details, because that is what actually gets checked.
Your deadline
Validation is not instant. Knowing the date you are working to is what stops this becoming urgent later.
Anything the policy specifies
Some policies name a validity period, a key type or a warranty. If yours does, send that wording too rather than paraphrasing it.
Frequently asked questions
Can I buy one today?
No. Nothing on this page is orderable yet. Registering interest tells us what to arrange first and gets you told when it is ready.
Is the free certificate worse than a paid one?
No. Same encryption, same browser trust, same padlock. The only difference is how much was verified about the organisation behind the domain before it was issued. For most sites that difference does not matter.
What will one cost?
We are not publishing a price we have not set. Tell us what you need and we will come back with the price when we can stand behind it.
Which certificate authority will you use?
We are not naming one until the arrangement is signed. If your policy requires a specific authority, say so in your enquiry — that is exactly the sort of constraint that decides who we work with.
Do I need extended validation for the green address bar?
There is no green address bar any more. Browsers removed that treatment years ago, and an extended-validation certificate now looks the same to a visitor as a free one. Buy it because a policy requires it, not because of how the address bar will look.
Can I put it on a server you do not host?
Yes, and that is one of the main reasons to buy one. A purchased certificate is a file. Our free certificates are tied to the platform that issues them.
What happens to my free certificate if I buy one?
Nothing. It keeps being issued and renewed for everything it already covers. A purchased certificate sits alongside it for the specific site or system that needed it.
