Create a database and use the database manager
Create a MariaDB or PostgreSQL database, keep its password safe, and browse, query, import and export it in your control panel.
Your control panel creates MariaDB and PostgreSQL databases, and has a built-in database manager for working with them. You do not need phpMyAdmin or a second login.
Good to know: a one-click application, such as WordPress, makes its own database when you install it. You only need this page for a database of your own.
Create a database
- In your control panel, select Databases in the menu.
- Scroll to the New database card.
- Choose the Engine: MariaDB or PostgreSQL.
- Choose a Collation if you need a particular one. The card explains each choice.
- Type the Database name (also the username). It must start with a letter and use lower-case letters, numbers and underscores, for example
acme_shop. - Set a Size quota (MB) if you want a different limit.
- Select Create database.
- Copy the username and password now. They are shown once and never again, because we keep only a check of the password, not the password itself.
How many databases you can have depends on your plan.
Lost the password?
Open the database and, on its Overview tab, select Rotate password. It makes a new password and shows it once. The old password keeps working until the server applies the change on its next cycle, so update your website's settings with the new one straight away.
Open the database manager
- Select Databases, then the database name.
- Open the Database manager tab.
You can:
- see what is in the database under Tables
- read data in the Query browser, which runs
SELECTandSHOWonly - change things in the SQL console
- paste a SQL script under Import SQL and select Import SQL.
Queries run as the database's own user, so they can reach exactly what that user can reach.
A website's own databases are also listed on the website's Databases tab, with links to each one.
Export or copy a database
- Export .sql on the Overview tab downloads the whole database as a SQL file.
- The Backups tab holds the database's backups, and Exports: plain SQL files you can download and keep.
- Copy into another database on the same tab copies it, for example into a staging copy's database.
Other logins and remote access
The Access tab has:
- Logins: extra users for the same database, for example a read-only login for a reporting tool.
- Remote access: the addresses allowed to reach the database from outside. Add one address or range per line, then select Save rules.
Deleting a database
Deleting a database locks its login and keeps its data for a while. It waits under Recently deleted on the Databases page, where you can select Restore.
