Undo DNS changes with zone history

Go back to an earlier version of your DNS records, keep a copy before a risky change, download your zone, or bring back a deleted domain.

lbreeze keeps earlier versions of each domain's DNS records, so a mistake in your DNS can be undone. You can also take a copy yourself before a change you are unsure about, and download the whole zone as a file.

When versions are kept

A version is kept:

  • once a day, if the records changed since the last version;
  • before an import that replaces the zone's records;
  • before a restore;
  • whenever you click Keep a version now.

A version is only stored when the records really changed, so one quiet day does not push older versions out. The newest 30 versions are held.

Keep a version before you change something

  1. In your control panel, choose DNS zones and click your domain.
  2. Find the Earlier versions card.
  3. Click Keep a version now.

Do this before any change you are not sure about. Ordinary record edits are only captured by the daily copy, so this is the way to be certain you can go back to the exact state you had.

Restore an earlier version

  1. In the Earlier versions card, find the version you want. The table shows when it was taken, how many records it held and why it was kept.
  2. Click Restore beside it and confirm.

The zone's records are replaced with the ones that version held. Your current records are kept as a version first, so a restore can itself be undone.

Good to know: A restore puts back the records you wrote. Records lbreeze keeps for your email, DANE and its own servers are left as they are, because they describe how your services are set up today.

Download your zone

The Export card has a button named after your domain, such as Download example.com.zone. It is generated from the records lbreeze is serving, in the standard format any other DNS provider can import. It is also a handy copy to keep for yourself.

Bring back a deleted domain

If you delete a domain from DNS zones, it is not removed straight away.

  1. Choose DNS zones.
  2. Find the Recently deleted card. It shows each deleted domain, when it was deleted, how many records it had, and when its records will be removed for good (or that they are kept indefinitely).
  3. Click Restore beside it.

A deleted domain cannot be restored if the same domain has been added again since; the card says so. Delete permanently removes a deleted domain's records at once, and after that it cannot be brought back.
