Point your domain at lbreeze
Make your domain reach your lbreeze website and email, either by switching its nameservers or by adding records where your DNS lives now.
A new website on lbreeze is not visible on your own domain until the domain points here. There are two ways to do that. Switching the nameservers is the one we recommend, because lbreeze then publishes and maintains every record your website and email need.
Option 1: use lbreeze's nameservers (recommended)
When you create a website, a DNS zone for its domain is created for you, and the records for the site are published into it. Your domain's registrar just needs to be told to use our nameservers.
- In your control panel, choose DNS zones and click your domain.
- Find the Nameservers card. It lists the nameservers your registrar needs for this domain.
- At the company where your domain is registered, replace the existing nameservers with these.
If your domain is registered with lbreeze, you can do step 3 in your client area:
- Go to Domains and click Manage beside the domain.
- Open the Nameservers tab.
- Click Use our DNS. If that button is greyed out, type the nameservers from your control panel into the list instead and click Save nameservers. At least two are needed.
Good to know: Before you switch, copy any records you still need from your old DNS provider, such as records for an existing mail service. Ask the old provider for a zone file and paste it into Import records on the zone page. See Edit your DNS records.
Check that it worked
On the zone page, the Delegation card asks the internet which nameservers answer for your domain. Click Check delegation. It shows the nameservers currently answering and the ones lbreeze expects. Changes at the registrar can take a while to be seen everywhere, so check again later if they do not match yet.
Option 2: keep your DNS where it is
If you want to keep your DNS with another provider, add records there that point at your website.
- In your control panel, choose My sites and open your website.
- On the Overview tab, find the Your domain card and click Check my DNS.
- The card shows what each of your site's names points at now, and the address they should point at.
- At your DNS provider, create an A record for your domain and for
wwwholding that address. Remove any old A records for the same names.
Good to know: With this option lbreeze cannot publish anything for you. For email in particular you must copy several records by hand, and the email can only be turned on from your website's page once lbreeze hosts the DNS. See Make sure your email arrives.
How long it takes
Resolvers around the world remember old answers for as long as each record's TTL says. If you are moving a busy website or email, lower the TTL at your old provider a day before you switch. See Lower the TTL before moving a domain.
While you wait, click Give me an address I can use now in the Your domain card. Your site gets a temporary name on our domain, so you can build and test it before you change anything at your registrar. It works over http until your own domain points here.
